BASIC is committed to supporting federal policies that build state and local capacity and ensure all communities across the country have modern public school buildings and grounds, especially those in the highest need school districts.
BASIC supports federal legislation that increases the federal government’s financial support for modernizing America’s schools and that is inclusive of the values of equity, educational excellence, safety, health, and climate resilience, and supportive of good jobs.
We believe that the federal government must have a robust and reliable role in making these values a consistent reality in our public school buildings and grounds. More information about our objectives, including specific policy levers we prioritize, can be found in the Coalition’s Federal Policy Position Statements.
Since 2016, BASIC has advanced federal policies and funding to support state and local leaders with their education infrastructure responsibilities.
BASIC Was a Leading Voice For:
The inclusion of school facilities needs as allowable use of 2021 American Rescue Plan funding
The establishment of the $500 million Renew America’s Schools program funded by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law
The 2023 establishment by the U.S. Department of Education of the National Center on School Infrastructure and the Supporting America’s School Infrastructure grants to support state capacity
